[Source] The Book of Revelation, chapter 19, contains what is perhaps the most famous Biblical passage concerning the return of Jesus. There, Jesus the Messiah is seen to burst forth from heaven, riding on a white horse with the armies of heaven following Him. But as powerful and well known as this prophetic portrayal of the return of Jesus is, few are aware of the fact that the prophecy of Ezekiel 38 and 39, most often known as the Battle of Gog of Magog, also concludes with the return of Jesus. In fact, it can be said that Ezekiel 38 and 39 is in fact, the Armageddon of the Old Testament.
Although many popular interpreters have wrongly understood this passage to conclude several years before the return of Jesus, any honest assessment of the text simply does not allow for this. But among the many reasons to reject a pre-Day of the LORD conclusion of this prophecy, one of the simplest, is because it concludes with the LORD actually physically present in the land of Israel.
That’s right, Ezekiel reveals that at the conclusion of Gog’s invasion, Jesus the Messiah is physically present on the ground, in the land. Consider the following passage:“For in my jealousy and in my blazing wrath I declare, on that day there shall be a great earthquake in the land of Israel. The fish of the sea and the birds of the heavens and the beasts of the field and all creeping things that creep on the ground, and all the people who are on the face of the earth, shall quake at my presence” —Ezekiel 38:19–20According to this text, the Lord Himself says that throughout the earth, both people and animals will “quake at [His] presence.” The word used for presence here is the Hebrew word paneh. Paneh is a reference to the actual face of someone or something. When God says that the people of the earth will quake at His paneh, He is saying that they will be terrified because of His actual physical presence, on the ground, in the land of Israel (see also: Zechariah 14:2-5, Isaiah 29:2-8, Revelation 16:16-20). Concerning the word paneh, The New Unger’s Bible Dictionary says, “The presence (face) of Jehovah is Jehovah in his own personal presence.” The New International Encyclopedia of Bible Words says, “In the OT, being in God’s or another’s presence is indicated by a preposition (l) prefixed to the Hebrew word panim (‘face’). The thought is to be ‘before the face of the person.” Paneh is used throughout the Old Testament to refer to the actual presence of God. Jacob, for instance, after wrestling with the Angel of the Lord, referred to seeing God face-to-face: “So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, ‘For I have seen God face [paneh] to face [paneh], and yet my life has been delivered’” —Genesis 32:30It is also interesting to note that in place of the Hebrew paneh, the Septuagint used the Greek word prosopon. Prosopon is one of two words commonly used in the New Testament to refer to actual presence. The other word is parousia, which is commonly associated with the Second Coming. To convey actual presence, betweenparousia and prosopon, prosopon is the more powerful term. While parousia most often implies coming, prosopon implies actual face-to-face presence. As Jesus is coming on the clouds, this is His parousia, but once He has actually arrived, then the word prosopon is used. An excellent example of the New Testament usage of prosopon is a scene where the righteous are actually looking upon the face of God in the eternal city: “No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. They will see his face [prosopon], and his name will be on their foreheads” —Revelation 22:4Ezekiel’s description of people quaking in fear of God’s face reveals that at the conclusion of the Battle of Gog and Magog, Jesus the Messiah, God incarnate, is physically present on the earth, in the land of Israel. The Holy One in Israel Further evidence for the physical presence of Jesus at the conclusion of this battle is seen in the following verse: “And my holy name I will make known in the midst of my people Israel, and I will not let my holy name be profaned anymore. And the nations shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.” — Ezekiel 39:7This is the only time that the phrase “the LORD, the Holy One in Israel” is used in the whole Bible. It is the Hebrew YHVH qadowsh baYisra’el. A similar phrase, “the Holy One of Israel” (qadowsh Yisra’el), is used thirty-one times in Scripture (e.g., Isaiah 12:6; 43:3; 55:5; 60:9, etc.). But here in Ezekiel, the Lord is not merely the Holy One of Israel; He is actually present in the land and on the ground! While the popular position holds that this passage concludes several years before the return of Jesus, this verse makes this an absolute impossibility. Other biblical commentators have also taken special note of God’s presence in Ezekiel’s oracle as evidence that it is a parallel to the Battle of Armageddon in Revelation 19. Apologist Dave Hunt for instance has stated: “There is no doubt, from both Zechariah 12 and Revelation 1 and 19, that this personal coming of Yahweh to rescue His people and to destroy Antichrist and his armies takes place at Armageddon. It is significant, then, that similar language concerning the personal presence of God is found in Ezekiel 38 and 39, thus identifying the event described there as Armageddon also.”Hunt’s observations are correct. But while most conservative, premillennialist, futurist interpreters who take Scripture at face value and use a literalist heremeutic will interpret the entirety of this passage in a literal fashion, when it comes to these two texts which show that God is actually present and in the land, many suddenly switch to an allegorical and non-literalist interpretation, without any justification for doing so. If one uses a consistent literal method to interpret Ezekiel 38 and 39, then one must acknowledge that it concludes with the return of Jesus the Messiah. And as I have said before, if this is the case, within the world of Biblical prophecy, this absolutely changes everything. It is high time for the Church to begin wrestling with the implications. |

[Source: Economist] For Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iran’s president, the annual session of the UN’s General Assembly in New York is an opportunity to forget domestic burdens and to shine, however bizarrely, on the world stage. Even before he addressed the assembly, he had created his usual rumpus on his arrival in the United States—by calling homosexuality “ugly”, denying the Holocaust, and describing Israel as a mere “disturbance” in Middle East history that would be “eliminated”. Moreover, he breezily dismissed the recent flurry of speculation that Israel might attack Iran’s nuclear facilities before the American presidential election in November.
A few days later, in his actual speech to the UN, he blasted “the uncivilised Zionists” for “intimidating” Iran. But he heralded a hoped-for second coming of Jesus, to be accompanied by “a perfect human being…named Imam al-Mahdi”, the “disappeared” 12th imam revered by Shia Muslims, who pray for his return, too. Back home, however, his top brass showed that they take the threat more seriously. On September 22nd a senior Revolutionary Guard commander made clear that Iran would treat an Israeli attack as American-abetted and would respond by attacking American military bases as well as shipping lanes in the Persian Gulf. A “third world war”, he said, would ensue. In his own UN address, Barack Obama did not deviate from his previous line that diplomacy, as well as the sanctions that have isolated Iran and slashed its oil revenue, must be given more time to work. But “the United States will do what it must,” he said, “to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.” If the Iranians did start turning their growing stockpile of enriched uranium into a bomb, Mr Obama would indeed find it hard not to respond with force. Yet a policy of more of the same—continuing to impose and tighten sanctions and taking covert action to contain a regime that is thought not yet to have taken a definitive bomb-making decision—is the one still apparently being mooted by Mr Obama’s advisers. Suzanne Maloney, an Iran expert at the Brookings Institution in Washington, thinks Iran will eventually make concessions in return for a lifting of sanctions. “This regime cannot survive without some source of external income,” she says. There is another, less sanguine theory, that Iran will persist in its drive to achieve a bomb—or at least a break-out capacity to get one quickly if it so desired. The Iranians say they never trusted Mr Obama’s offer of detente early in his presidency because of the heavier sanctions and the campaigns of sabotage and assassination that accompanied the offer. In the same vein, they deplore the American administration’s recent decision to drop its longstanding classification of the exiled People’s Mujahedeen of Iran as a terrorist organisation. So Iran’s rulers will not easily trust future pledges to lift sanctions in return for nuclear concessions. In any event, Iran’s leaders may now believe that such concessions would destroy the Islamic Republic’s credibility and open it to a recurrence of the unrest that followed Mr Ahmadinejad’s disputed re-election in 2009. So it is possible that an American policy of containment, even an undeclared one, might lead to a long campaign of attrition of the kind that impoverished Iraq in the 1990s, while leaving its leader in power. Anticipating trouble, Iran’s hardliners have been stifling the remaining repositories of dissent as fiercely as ever. The most notable of these is Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, an establishment heavyweight and former president who became an opposition figurehead after the contentious poll of 2009. The two most controversial of his five children—his daughter Faezeh and his son Mehdi—have recently been arrested, undoubtedly with the approval of Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei. Mr Rafsanjani had been expected to put up a fight when Mr Khamenei tries, as he probably will, to install his own nominee as president in elections that are due next spring. But with his children behind bars, the former president may favour circumspection over principle. |
Iran's president has accused the West of nuclear "intimidation" in a UN General Assembly address boycotted by the United States and Israel.
It was using a nuclear arms race to threaten other nations to accept the status quo, said Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. He told reporters later that Iran was ready for talks with the US.
The West suspects Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons, but Tehran insists its nuclear programme is solely for peaceful purposes.
'Soulful breeze' It was Mr Ahmadinejad's eighth and final speech at a debate of the UN General Assembly before he steps down.
"[The] arms race and intimidation by nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction by the hegemonic powers have become prevalent," he told the 193-nation annual gathering.

"Continued threat by the uncivilised Zionists [Israel] to resort to military action is a clear example of this bitter reality," Mr Ahmadinejad said.
He said the world was in need of a new order and a fresh way of thinking, as "the existence of discrimination and monopoly in the UN is in no way acceptable". He closed with a poetic exhortation to the second coming of Jesus Christ.
He said this event would complete "the soulful breeze of the spring" - an apparent reference to the Arab Spring - as Christ would be accompanied by "a perfect human being... named Imam al-Mahdi... he will lead humanity into achieving its glorious and eternal ideals".
At a news conference later, the Iranian leader said Tehran was ready for dialogue with the US, despite Washington's use of sanctions "as revenge on the people".
And he said his country was not afraid of nuclear attacks against nuclear facilities - "Iran can neutralise" such attacks, he said.
On the eve of the General Assembly debate, Mr Ahmadinejad had told a UN meeting that Israel was a "fake regime", prompting Israel's UN Ambassador, Ron Prosor, to walk out.

The Iranian leader refrained from such inflammatory remarks during Wednesday's half-hour speech, which the US delegation had boycotted due to his recent attacks on Israel. Israel's ambassador was not present, because it was Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

In his address to the General Assembly on Tuesday, US President Barack Obama had again stressed the US would "do what we must" to stop Tehran acquiring nuclear arms.
Six weeks before the US election, he said a nuclear-armed Iran was "not a challenge that can be contained".
Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has been pressing Washington to set Tehran "red lines" which, if crossed, would lead to military intervention.
Mr Netanyahu recently warned that Iran was only six or seven months from having "90%" of what it needed to make a nuclear bomb and that it needed to be stopped. He is expected to take the same message to the General Assembly on Thursday.
