Beheaded: Obama's Syrian Rebels Decapitate Christian Bishop

(RT) - A video purportedly showing an extrajudicial public beheading of two Bashar Assad loyalists has been uploaded onto the internet. Its authenticity has been verified by pro and anti-Assad sources, though it remains unclear who is behind the execution.

In the nine-minute clip, a group of several hundred people, including men, women and children stands around a hill, when the sentenced men, bound with ropes and wearing bags on their heads are led out. As the crowd closes in with shouts of Allah Akbar (“Glory to God!”) the two, who are wearing civilian clothes, are laid on the floor, and a bearded ‘executioner’ methodically saws through the throat of first one, then the other with a knife. The heads of the dead men are then placed on top of their bodies as the crowd continues to bay.

The phone-filmed video was uploaded on Wednesday to video-sharing site YouTube by Syrian Truth, a group that supports President Bashar Assad, which previously uncovered a clip of an anti-government fighter eating what appeared to be a human heart. According to the voices in the footage, it was shot in Khan al-Assal, near the city of Aleppo the north of the country.

The authenticity of the video was also endorsed by resources that have chiefly backed the rebels in the internal conflict that has lasted over two years – such as the UK-based Observatory for Human Rights and all4Syria.info, which moved to condemn its contents.

The identities of all parties involved in the video remain unclear.

A man is heard on the tape charges the two ‘convicted’ men of transporting weapons and ammunition for the regular army.

“I did not transport weapons, brother” cries out the man, writhing on the ground, with his hands tied behind his back.

One of the men in the video shouts out “This is punishment for the Shabiha!”. The Shabiha is a loyalist, semi-official plain-clothes militia that Assad’s opponents say has been used to crack down on dissent in contested areas. The force was implicated by the United Nations in the Houla Massacre last year, in which as many as a hundred people may have died.

Various other media, sympathetic to Assad, claimed the men were Christians, executed for religious reason, with several alleging that one of those executed was a priest. No site supplied possible names of the condemned.

The identity of the executioners is also murky.

The Syrian National Coalition, which represents the mainstream opposition to Assad, said it was still running tests to verify whether the perpetrators were genuine rebel fighters, saying the sound and images may have been tampered with for propaganda purposes. It also insisted that the “rule of law” must be preserved, including the right of anyone captured to a“fair and free trial”.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on its Facebook page that “perpetrators spoke with a classical Arabic accent and did not sound Arabic, they sounded Chechniyan (sic)”. All4Syria also claimed the executioners were fighters from the former Soviet Union, possibly Uzbekistan or Azerbaijan. Snippets of Russian can be heard in the video.

Various local sources said the militia responsible may have been part of Jabhat al Nusra – the Al Qaeda-affiliated radical Islamist group that has swelled with foreign fighters and local recruits as the conflict has dragged on.

Videos of unconfirmed provenance, depicting atrocities and use of illegal weapons, have become an almost-daily feature of the war that has cost at least 90,000 lives according to the UN. Hostage Crisis: The Blind Sheikh, Benghazi and Smoking Guns

A Libyan intelligence document has been produced that directly implicates Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood president Mohammed Mursi in the attacks on American installations in Benghazi on 9/11/12. Those who attempt to discredit this document run into trouble when it is coupled with real-time video we uncovered on 9/13/12. In that video, gunmen at the scene of the attack can be heard declaring that they were sent by Mursi.

After weeks of attempting to push the narrative that a video was responsible, the Obama administration ultimately had to concede that the attacks in Benghazi were terrorist in nature. A few months after 9/11/12, the top lawyer for the Pentagon stated that the war on terror should be waged by “law enforcement and intelligence agencies”.

Based on the Obama administration’s standard, the Benghazi attacks should be treated as a crime instead of as an act of war. Therefore, let us bring forth the evidence, which implicates the leader of a nation state (Egypt) in the attack and warrants a grand jury (House of Representatives) investigation to decide if administration officials should be indicted (impeached).

Since we’re deciding who to indict, we must look at evidence of involvement in the attack. Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood President – Mohammed Mursi – is a good place to start. Our first two exhibits are both damning but when taken together, may just constitute a ‘smoking gun’.EXHIBIT A is a video shot from a cell phone at the scene of the attacks. In this video, gunmen are seen running toward the camera, toward other gunmen. At one point – in Arabic which we have confirmed – one approaching gunman says, “Don’t Shoot us! We were sent by Mursi!”. Even though the video is in Arabic, you can discern the word “Mursi”.

A Libyan Intelligence document (EXHIBIT B) has now been brought forward by credible Arabic translator Raymond Ibrahim. This document discusses the confessions of six members of an Egyptian Ansar al-Sharia cell who were arrested and found to be involved in the Benghazi attacks. Ibrahim reported the following about this document:

It discusses the preliminary findings of the investigation, specifically concerning an “Egyptian cell” which was involved in the consulate attack. “Based on confessions derived from some of those arrested at the scene” six people, “all of them Egyptians” from the jihad group Ansar al-Sharia (“Supporters of Islamic Law), were arrested.

According to the report, during interrogations, these Egyptian jihadi cell members “confessed to very serious and important information concerning the financial sources of the group and the planners of the event and the storming and burning of the U.S. consulate in Benghazi…. And among the more prominent figures whose names were mentioned by cell members during confessions were: Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi…

That the attack was planned and involved foreigners corroborates what Libyan President Mohamed Yousef el-Magariaf told CBS News’ Bob Scheiffer on Face the Nation on Sunday, September 16th (EXHIBIT C):

BOB SCHIEFFER: And you believe that this was the work of al Qaeda and you believe that it was led by foreigners. Is that– is that what you are telling us?

MOHAMED YOUSEF EL-MAGARIAF: It was planned– definitely, it was planned by foreigners, by people who– who entered the country a few months ago, and they were planning this criminal act since their– since their arrival.

Relative to Mursi’s alleged involvement, El-Magariaf provided only circumstantial evidence by identifying attackers as being “foreigners” but in retrospect, the Libyan president’s claims that day are corroborated by the Libyan Intelligence document and the real-time video. It is for this reason that we request he be required to testify in front of the grand jury.

Also on September 16, 2012, U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice appeared on five Sunday talk shows and asserted the attack was the result of a spontaneous demonstration in response to a video. Here are quotes from Rice’s appearance during on ABC This Week, during which she said the following (EXHIBIT D):

“What happened this week in Cairo, in Benghazi, in many other parts of the region was a result, a direct result of a heinous and offensive video that was widely disseminated, that the U.S. Government had nothing to do with, which we have made clear is reprehensible and disgusting.”

At a minimum, Rice was directing attention away from Mursi’s involvement with this demonstrably false statement. A short time later, she went as far as directly defending Mursi:

“President Obama picked up the phone and talked to President Mursi in Egypt and as soon as he did that, the security provided to our personnel and our embassies dramatically increased… President Mursi has been out repeatedly and said that he condemns this violence. He’s called off… and his people have called off any further demonstrations and have made very clear, that this has to stop.”

Rice attempted to leave viewers with two impressions, one demonstrably false and the other belied by hard evidence:

1. A video was responsible
2. Mursi was not involved

And of which of the panoply of issues currently facing our country was this speaker thinking? The stalled economy? Youth unemployment? No. The words were spoken by Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, the ‘minister for faith’, and the issue she was happy to report as a UK government ‘priority’ was the tackling of ‘Islamophobia’.

Coming just days after the bombing of the Boston Marathon by two young radical Muslims, Baroness Warsi’s comments were not just poorly timed — they were poorly thought through. The killing of three people and injury of more than 260 others would have been the perfect time for Britain’s only Muslim cabinet minister to address and assault the ideology which causes such attacks: radical Islam. B Days later, a soldier was beheaded by Islamists on the streets of Woolwich. But — aside from attacking the most irrelevant, fringe extremists like Al-Muhajiroun — Warsi has never taken up this role. This is not just her own failing. It is an exemplar of a wider cultural failure.

In the first years after 9/11 there was some success in turning the global spotlight onto what Islamic fundamentalists believed, taught and aimed to achieve. But then — at some point in the last five or more years — that spotlight was turned around. It was not on the extremists but on the rest of us — Muslim and non-Muslim — that it settled. It became all of us who were the problem — not the crimes of the fundamentalists but our response to them. The primary problem was no longer Islamic fundamentalism but ‘Islamophobia’. This narrative has not only become pervasive in our societies — it has become dominant. It is stopping us from dealing with the most severe challenge to our security. It is time to unfold the lie.

I have long argued — in this magazine and elsewhere — that the very word ‘Islamophobia’ is a nonsense term. A ‘phobia’ is something of which one is irrationally afraid. Yet it is supremely rational to be scared of elements of Islam and of its fundamentalist strains in particular. Nevertheless the term has been very successfully deployed, not least because it has the aura of a smear. ‘Islamophobes’ are not only subject to an irrational and unnecessary fear; they are assumed to be motivated (because most Muslims in the West are from an ethnic minority) by ‘racism’. Who would not recoil from such charges?

There is also something akin to the charge of anti-Semitism in the accusation — a link that many Jewish leaders have promoted. It was several years after 9/11 that I first remember speaking on a panel with a leader from the Jewish community. My co-speaker framed his remarks by saying, ‘We must fight anti-Semitism but we must also fight Islamophobia.’ He could not answer my question of how you could condemn Islamic anti-Semitism without committing an act of ‘Islamophobia’. Stonehenge Summer Solstice 2013

Here’s a new twist on church growth: creating a pagan atmosphere and branding campaign for New Age spiritualists in order to increase the number of bodies in the pews. The Church of England is actually training its ministers to create “a pagan church where Christianity [is] very much in the center” to attract spiritual believers.

That means changing the Anglican church doctrine to make it more inclusive for people of alternative beliefs. The Church of England admits that its motive is to retain congregation numbers who have embraced paganism. The Church Mission Society, which is training ministers to “break new ground” in order to get spiritual people into churches.  If you’ve come from a Seeker-Driven model, that might actually sound like a good thing. Get them in the doors and tell them about Jesus, right? But make no mistake; that is not what is happening here. The Jesus the Church of England is re-creating is not the Jesus of the Bible.

A little update on the Church of England: It recently gave up its fight against gay marriage, and also went as far as to bless civil partnerships.

The Church Mission Society’s Andrea Campenale, said: “Nowadays people, they want to feel something; they want to have some sense of experience. We live in reflective England where there’s much more of a focus on ourselves. I think that is something we can bring in dialogue with the Christian society.”

The Church Mission Society’s webpage advertising their pioneer training scheme states: “Wherever in the world the mission of Jesus goes on, the church needs pioneer mission leaders to break new ground.”

This news release was actually coordinated a couple of days ago to align with the Summer Solstice, with events lining up around the celebrations at Stonehenge which recently underwent a multimillion dollar transformation. A couple of days ago 20,000 spiritual seekers celebrated the summer solstice there. Pagans and druids gathered to celebrate at the historic monument.

Shortly after the DEBKA aired a special video on the Syrian war’s widening circle, Moscow announced Wednesday June 26, that the evacuation which had begun Friday of all military and diplomatic personnel from Syria was now complete, including the Russian naval base at Tartus.

“Russia decided to withdraw its personnel because of the risks from the conflict in Syria, as well as the fear of an incident involving the Russian military that could have larger consequences,” said a defense ministry official in Moscow. He stressed that a 16-ship naval task force in the eastern Mediterranean remains on post and arms shipments, including anti-air weapons, would continue to the Syrian government in keeping with former contracts.

In another sign of an impending escalation in Syria, the Israeli Golan brigade staged Wednesday an unannounced war maneuver on the Golan, attended by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and top army chiefs. In London, Prime Minister David Cameron called the government’s National Security Council into session in Downing Street on Syria. Opposition leader Ed Milliband was invited to attend the meeting, a custom observed only when issues of the highest security importance are discussed. Earlier Wednesday, DEBKAfile carried the following report in its special video presentation under the heading: Putin and Obama cross swords on Syrian. What Next?

The sullen confrontation between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Barack Obama at the G8 Summit in Northern Ireland last week condemned Syria to five months of escalating, unresolved vicious warfare – that is until the two leaders meet again in September.

For now, tempers are heating up between Washington and Moscow on Syria and other things too, notably the elusive American fugitive Edward Snowden.
US and Israeli intelligence watchers see the Syrian crisis entering seven ominous phases:
1. A five-month bloodbath centering on the battle for Aleppo, a city of 2.2 million inhabitants.

The Syrian army plus allies and the fully-mobilized opposition will hurl all their manpower and weapons into winning the city.

Military experts don’t expect the rebels to hold out against Assad’s forces beyond late August.

2.  Neither side has enough manpower or game-changing weaponry for winning the war outright.

That is, unless Presidents Obama or Putin steps in to retilt the balance.

3. The US and Russia are poised for more military intervention in the conflict up until a point just short of a military clash on Syrian soil – or elsewhere in the Middle East. US intelligence analysts have judged Putin ready to go all the way on Syria against the US - no holds barred.
The Russian president is meanwhile deliberately goading Washington and raising temperatures by playing hide-and-seek over the former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, charged with espionage for stealing and leaking classified intelligence. At home, he is considered variously as a traitor and a brave whistleblower.

For several hours Snowden vanished between Hong Kong and Moscow – until the Russian president admitted he was holed up in the transit area of Moscow airport and would not be extradited by Russia to the United States.

4.  Iran, Hizballah and Iraq will likewise ratchet up their battlefield presence.

5. A violent encounter is building up between Middle East Shiites flocking to Syria to save the Assad regime alongside Russia, and the US-backed Sunni-dominated rebel forces.
It could scuttle the secret US-Iranian negotiating track on its nuclear program, which was buoyed up by the election of the pragmatic Hassan Rouhani as President of Iran.

6.  The Geneva-2 Conference for a political solution for the Syrian crisis is dead in the water. Moscow and the US are divided by unbridgeable issues of principle, such whether Bashar Assad should stay or go and Iranian representation. 

7.  So long as the diplomatic remains stuck in the mud, the prospects of a regional war spreading out of the Syrian conflict are rising. Iran, Israel, Jordan and Lebanon may be dragged in at any moment – if they have not already, like Lebanon.

A small mistake by one of the Syrian warring parties in Syria could, for example, touch off Israeli retaliation and a wholesale spillover of violence.

Today’s episode deals with the power of time travel and the mystery of the past and the future in our present. Our story surrounds the lives of a retired Pastor and his wife; Henry and Hazel Smith. It seems that Henry and Hazel came upon, quite unexpectedly, a time warp machine on their little farm outside of southwest Ohio. The Smith’s were married in 1913 and were celebrating their 50th Anniversary and were just talking about how nice it would be to be able to go back 50 years in time to relive their happy marriage all over again. This is when they stumbled upon the time warp machine.

But instead of going backward in time, they were sent into the future; to the year 2013.

WHAT THEY FOUND TERRIFIED THEM! They discovered that marriage had been redefined and that the one man/one woman concept was no longer what made a marriage. To their dismay, they found that adultery and divorce was commonplace and was bearly questioned, even among Christian people. It appeared that a normal happily married couple was almost non-existent because so many things had splintered the family. They could not believe what they were seeing and experiencing from the future.

They found that technology had bypassed anything they had ever imagined. They were amazed to find that nearly every home had one of those new things called a television, but now televisions were the central part of the home. They were huge and in bright full color instead of being a small little black and white screen sitting in the corner. But what they saw on these new was even more shocking. They found that television went from 3 channels to view, to over 300 to view!

However, they were appalled by what was being shown. Marriage was attacked constantly, while, at the same time, an “alternate lifestyle” with open sexual immorality was protrayed as completely normal. They discovered that “gay” no longer meant happy. They found that the brightest, most intelligent, and most popular people in America were these “gay” people, and that the worse people in America were those mindless, bigoted Christians, with their hateful ways found in the Bible. The Smith’s couldn’t believe what they were seeing! “Is this the future of our Nation?”, Henry asked his wife Hazel. “Do you understand what this means to our children and grandchildren?” They both began to weep…

The Smith’s were terrified by what the time warp machine had shown them. They were horrified by what America had become in the year 2013. What could they do? How could they change the direction that America was heading?

It was in June of 2013 when the Smith’s sat in front of one of those full color televisions and heard the announcement of the Supreme Court Ruling regarding “Gay Marriage” – the News Reporter was about to bring the breaking news live from Washington, D.C., when suddenly the Smith’s were teleported back 50 years to their living room in that small farm house. There they stood, wrapped in each other’s arms – staring at a small black and white television in the corner…

Suddenly, they both knew what to do, without even saying anything to each other. Henry bolted to the closet and pulled out his shotgun, while Hazel carried that little black and white television out to the backyard – and that retired pastor lifted the shotgun up, took an aim for that small screen and put that television “out of its misery”.

It was then they realized they had just experienced the “Church In The Twilight Zone”

Accordingly, among other influential Egyptians, Morsi recently called on Coptic Christian Pope Tawadros II to urge his flock, Egypt’s millions of Christians, not to join the June 30 protests. While that may be expected, more troubling is that the U.S. ambassador to Egypt is also trying to prevent Egyptians from protesting—including the Copts. The June 18 edition of Sadi al-Balad reports that lawyer Ramses Naggar, the Coptic Church’s legal counsel, said that during Patterson’s June 17 meeting with Pope Tawadros, she “asked him to urge the Copts not to participate” in the demonstrations against Morsi and the Brotherhood. The Pope politely informed her that his spiritual authority over the Copts does not extend to political matters. Regardless, many Egyptian activists are condemning Patterson for continuously behaving like the Muslim Brotherhood’s stooge. Leading opposition activist Shady el-Ghazali Harb said Patterson showed “blatant bias” in favor of Morsi and the Brotherhood, adding that her remarks had earned the U.S. administration “the enmity of the Egyptian people.” Coptic activists like George Ishaq openly told Patterson to “shut up and mind your own business.” And Christian business tycoon Naguib Sawiris—no stranger to Islamist hostility—posted a message on his Twitter account addressed to the ambassador saying “Bless us with your silence.”...Continue reading

These are some questions I have been pondering of late and with September being just two short months away, I believe it is important to re-post an article from earlier this year which gives insight into the militant mindset of Islam and the timing that is in place to first come against Israel, and then the whole world.

Now we know from Scripture that Islam will never fully succeed in this measure but the death and destruction from this effort to conquer and control the world will be catastrophic; namely Armageddon.  So how close are we?

When The Fuse To Armageddon Was Lit

Most will remember this infamous handshake on the White House lawn; the handshake that reverberated around the world and made headlines in September of 1993.  “Peace”they cried and many marveled at such an achievement yet all the while clueless that this momentous event had just lit the fuse and the countdown to Armageddon had begun.

The Oslo Accords were intended to pave the way for a Palestinian State in the 1990′s yet clearly this did not happen but that goal still remains, under the guise of peace, which in reality is the old Muslim road that leads to war.

Now the Bible gives us much understanding regarding the implications of the Oslo Accords in that before Joshua led the children of Israel into their Promised Land, Moses gave the people many instructions from God, all for their own safety and good; there were blessings for obedience and curses if they disobeyed.  One of the warnings was that they must never enter into any covenant with the nations round about them.

Deuteronomy 7:1-2
1 When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou;
2 And when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them:

But Yitzhak Rabin paid no heed to God’s warning when he sold out the nation of Israel to her enemies in 1993 by entering into a covenant with them through the Oslo Accords.  The following passage well describes what took place on that grave day and sadly, Mr. Rabin paid dearly for his part in all this when he was assassinated on November 4, 1995.

Jeremiah 6:14-15
14 They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.
15 Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore they shall fall among them that fall: at the time that I visit them they shall be cast down, saith the LORD.

I realize this is old news but it is important to understand how signing the Oslo Accords changed everything for Israel in that because of it, their hands are now tied regarding how they respond to terrorism that assaults them on a daily basis.  Further, each successive government is now bound by this agreement to divide the land of Israel as a break with this covenant would not only incur the wrath of Muslims, but the whole world as well.

Now while it may be that Israel entered into this agreement out of a genuine desire for peace, to the Muslims it is a tactical military maneuver known in Arabic as the Truce of Hudaybiyyah of which Ramon Bennett in “Philistine The Great Deception” writes,

“Mohammed first used the Truce against the inhabitants of Mecca in the 7th century — two years before he destroyed them.  Saladin, the famous 12th century Moslem Prince also used the Truce and made “peace” with the Crusaders in the Holy Land before attacking and defeating them.  The Truce has become a model for all agreements with non-Moslems (infidels).  It is never permanent: never lasting more than 10 years (with the possibility of another 10 year extension, no more).  Islam is not permitted to stop its war against non-Moslems for more than this period. The countdown to Armageddon, therefore, began in September 1993, and the war ought to be launched before September 2003, but must begin, at the very latest, in September 2013.  The actual timing for the war will entirely depend upon Islam’s perception of its own strength, and that of Israel’s weakness brought about by the Truce.”

Armed with this knowledge of Islam’s strategy for conquest through truces, it looks very much like 2013 will be a year like none other.  With hostilities as high as they presently are in the Middle East it is hard to believe war has not yet broken out and if it is held at bay until Islam’s deadline of September 13th, things may well come to a head this year right at the fall Feasts of The Lord which point to the rapture, the time of Jacob’s trouble (the tribulation) and Jesus’ glorious return to set up His kingdom!

The Oslo Accords were never a covenant of peace but one of war.  The Bible actually refers to the “peace process” as a “covenant with death” because Israel trusted in lies and falsehood for her peace and security rather than trusting in God alone and sadly, she will pay dearly for this disobedience with much bloodshed.

Isaiah 28:14-18
14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation, a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.

Yet in spite of a bleak outlook all hope is not lost as God will use these Islamic-inspired wars with Israel to bring salvation both to Israel and the nations.  His purpose is to draw the focus of world attention to bear upon Himself as He brings Israel onto center stage in world events through the means of horrific and catastrophic wars.  God specifically chose Israel as the nation through whom He would make a name for Himself and what He says in His Word, He will do.

Are those who submit to Islam truly fundamental to their faith and are we now in the final stages of the countdown to Armageddon?  Time will soon tell and I believe we must remain watchful and be in prayer regarding all of this.

The Sinai Peninsula, located between the Mediterranean and the Gulf of Aqaba, an area of about 23,000 square miles, is the site of both historically biblical significance and of constant warfare. Sinai is where Moses received the Ten Commandments, and the area the Israelites crossed on their way to the Promised Land. Near Mount Sinai is the Monastery of the Transfiguration or St. Catherine’s Monastery, a World Heritage Site with an extraordinary collection of mosaics, early icons, and liturgical objects, which is the oldest working Christian monastery in the world.

Sinai has also been the site of many conflicts over the centuries. After four hundred years of rule by the Ottoman Empire the administration of Sinai was transferred to the Egyptian government, which had been largely controlled by Britain since 1882. Britain imposed the border of Sinai from Rafah to Taba, which is still recognized as the eastern border of Egypt. From Sinai the Egyptian forces in May 1948 invaded the territory of the former British Mandate of Palestine to attack the new State of Israel. After the 1948-49 war Egypt controlled both Sinai and the Gaza Strip. In 1956 Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal, an unprovoked act that led to a temporary alliance of Britain, France, and Israel to challenge it. During the brief 1956 war Israeli troops entered Sinai, and occupied most of it in a few days.

Under pressure from the Eisenhower Administration, Israel withdrew from the area. The United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) was set up to prevent any military occupation of Sinai. But in 1967, Nasser prohibited Israeli shipping using Egyptian territorial waters, including Suez, and on May 16, 1967 ordered UNEF to withdraw from Sinai, an order without the required UN Security Council approval. Israel responded in the Six Day War in June 1967 during which its forces captured the whole of Sinai. Israel remained in control of the area until the decisions at the Camp David Accords on September 17, 1978 and the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty of March 26, 1979, according to which Israel agreed to withdrew from the whole area, and dismantle all its settlements, including Yamit.

Russia threatened to veto the creation of an UN peacekeeping force to monitor the situation. But negotiations between Egypt, Israel, and the United States led on August 3, 1981 to a decision to establish the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) outside the framework of the United Nations to enforce the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty. Since 1982 its responsibilities include operating checkpoints and observation posts, reconnaissance patrols, and ensuring freedom of marine navigation in the Strait of Tiran, and access to the Gulf of Aqaba.

The MFO is located in Zone C, one of the four zones into which Sinai is divided, and which is about a quarter of the whole of the Sinai Peninsula. Only the MFO and the Egyptian civilian police are allowed in this Zone C which has two main installations, one at El Gorah, and the other near Sharm el Sheikh, and another 30 small ones.
The MFO is now a force, with headquarters in Rome, in which 1600 personnel drawn from 13 countries participate. The U.S. accounts for about 700, a number which the Pentagon wishes to reduce. The Observer contingent is composed of civilians seconded to the peacekeeping force.

For some years while Hosni Mubarak was President of Egypt, Sinai remained relatively quiet, with the MFO for three decades helping to maintain a durable state of peace. However, since his departure and the coming to power of President Mohammed Morsi on June 30, 2012, the area has become increasingly lawless and the state of security has deteriorated. The authorities in Sinai, the Egyptian military and police and the MFO, have been increasingly confronted by troubling actions and threats by Islamist and other terrorist groups, and by Bedouin activists.

Sinai must now be recognized as an area with a security vacuum. Bedouins have been linked to smuggling of arms, drugs, and human trafficking. They claim they have been mistreated by Egyptian security forces who disrespect them. Some of them compare this to their more favorable treatment while Israel controlled the area, between 1967 and 1982, because Israel had been concerned to study their culture, tribes, law, and customs.

Sinai has witnessed the rise of terrorist groups, some linked to al-Qaeda. In June 2009 terrorists killed an Egyptian police officer who was a member of the Egyptian counterterrorism department in the security agency. In August 2011 the Popular Resistance Committees (in essence Palestinian terrorists) launched a raid into Israel from its base in Sinai killing eight people. Palestinians from Gaza, together with Bedouins, have formed the Mujahedeen Consultative Council, an al-Qaeda inspired group, to attack Israel.

On August 5, 2012 armed jihadists, trained in Gaza, took control of an Egyptian police station in north Sinai, murdering 16 people and driving off an armed personnel carrier which they said was to fight against Israel. On May 16, 2013 a sophisticated attack by a Bedouin terrorist group, acting with the help of an extreme Islamic group affiliated with al-Qaeda, kidnapped seven policemen near the town of El-Arish. The Bedouins had demanded the release of prisoners who had been sentenced to death for murdering a police officer. President Morsi has called this a criminal act.
Life has been made difficult for Egyptian authorities for Israel, and for the MFO which because of the danger has been forced to cancel some of its patrols. In a recent report, the U.S. State Department has commented on the difficulty the Egyptian National Security Sector has in combating terrorist threats and concluding that it has had few successes in the Sinai Peninsula. Northern Sinai, especially the area of Rafah, is the route for smuggling people, cash, arms and explosives into Gaza, and is a base for Palestinian violent extremists.

The Rafah border crossing into Gaza has been attacked by extremists over 30 times. Egypt has been unable to control the use by terrorists of the tunnels into Gaza.

One consequence of the increasing jihadist activity and the inability of Egyptians to control it is that Israel is now building a security fence along a 150 mile border with Egypt. Two conclusions follow from the breakdown in law and order in Sinai. The first is that cooperation between Israel and Egypt is recognized as essential. President Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood appreciate that Israel is more welcome than al-Qaeda in the area, and that the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty must be maintained. The other is that the international community should recognize the value of the Multinational Force and even strengthen its operation in Sinai.
