THE NEW YORKER: Darren Aronofsky Gets Biblical
In “Heavy Weather” (p. 46), Tad Friend follows the director Darren Aronofsky through the process of his forthcoming Biblical epic, “Noah,” due out this month, and—using interviews with him and with studio executives, along with visits to the set, the editing room, and his childhood home—explores what happens when a director known for his difficult films gets hired to make a blockbuster. “Aronofsky has two traits that alarm studios,” Friend writes. “Though he’s organized, conscientious, and fiscally responsible, he is also incorrigibly rampageous,” adding, “it’s impossible to persuade him to adopt the studio mind-set—to persuade him, for instance, that a film should have a happy ending.” The other, related problem, according to Friend, is that Aronofsky insists that the audience come to him. “Studios test films to make sure that people are comfortable with them; Aronofsky, whose great strength is creating a tone that people haven’t felt before, wants his crowds squirming.” The unanticipated success of Aronofsky’s last film, “Black Swan,” has given him “access to new and dangerous toys,” Friend writes. Paramount Pictures produced “Noah,” a retelling of the story of Noah’s Ark, featuring an expanded narrative that includes family strife, an epic battle, sci-fi—including pipe guns, explosions, and six-armed fallen angels—and Darwinian evolution, at a final cost of a hundred and thirty million dollars. A WARNING FOR CHRISTIAN
BEGINNINGANDEND.COM: 2014 will see a large number of Christian-themed movies hit the big screen and one of the most anticipated of them is Noah, directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Oscar-winner Russell Crowe. While there will be much hype and excitement for this movie, the early reports indicate that the Noah film will not be in line with the Biblical account of Noah’s ark and the flood, but instead will push a liberal, political message focused on the environmental agenda. Christians and those interested in a Biblical story thus need to be warned to use discernment and not support Hollywood as it exploits the Bible for gain and promotes a film that casts the God of the Bible in a bad light
