The existing UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon is urging "all actors" to step back from escalation.
"The price of continuing the current course of action is too high," the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) says.

UNIFIL says the IDF told it yesterday of the intention to undertake "limited ground incursions into Lebanon".
"Any crossing into Lebanon is in violation of Lebanese sovereignty and territorial integrity, and a violation of resolution 1701," UNFIL says.
The 2006 UN Security Council resolution 1701 called for a full Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon. It also established that the Lebanese army and UN peacekeepers could be the only armed forces south of the Litani River.

Hamas leader in Lebanon 'worked undercover as a teacher for UN refugee agency' before he was wiped out in Israeli airstrike

The leader of Hamas in Lebanon worked for a UN refugee agency before he was killed in an Israeli strike, it has been revealed.

Fateh Sherif Abu al-Amin died in the Al-Buss refugee camp in Lebanon's southern city of Tyre in an attack by Israel's air force yesterday.

The group said al-Amin was killed with his wife, son and daughter in what it called a 'terrorist and criminal assassination'.

But the UN's agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, confirmed today that Sherif was employed as a teacher, prompting Israel to levy fresh accusations that it is tied to Palestinian militant groups.

UNRWA said it had put the Hamas commander on 'administrative leave without pay' in March as it investigated allegations about his political activities, insisting it was committed to neutrality and works to prevent any such infiltration.

It comes after the UNRWA admitted in August that nine of its employees 'may have been involved' in the October 7 Hamas attack.

In a statement confirming his death, the IDF said Sherif 'led the Hamas terrorist organisation's force build-up efforts in Lebanon and operated to advance Hamas' interests in Lebanon, both politically and militarily'.

However, he was also cited as the principal of the UNRWA's Deir Yassin school and head of a prominent teacher's union before he was suspended in March.

His role as a teacher in a UN school is sure to lead to yet more criticism of the UNRWA by Israel, which had some of its funding withdrawn from Israel's allies after Tel Aviv claimed UNRWA employees were involved in Hamas October 7 attacks.

In August, the UN Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS) completed its investigation into the alleged involvement of 19 UNRWA staff members in the attacks.

'OIOS made findings in relation to each of the 19 UNRWA staff members alleged to have been involved in the attacks,' he said.

He added: 'In one case, no evidence was obtained by OIOS to support the allegations of the staff member's involvement, while in nine other cases, the evidence obtained by OIOS was insufficient to support the staff member's involvement.

'We have sufficient information in order to take the actions that we're taking - which is to say, the termination of these nine individuals.'

Hezbollah strikes back: Intense fighting erupts in southern Lebanon as militants unleash barrage of rockets 'targeting Israeli troops' after IDF commandos stormed border and rained down bombs on Beirut

Hezbollah has unleashed a barrage of rockets on several Israeli settlements hours after Israel's Defence Forces (IDF) launched raids on southern Lebanon.

The Lebanese group targeted the border villages of Shtula, Metula and Avivim while sending dozens of rockets streaming toward the city of Haifa - a major port city in Israel's north - and Tel Aviv.

The Israeli military said the operations in Lebanon began on Monday night and involved the elite 98th division, which was deployed to the northern front two weeks ago from Gaza where they had been fighting against Hamas for months.

It said its air force and artillery supported ground troops engaged in 'limited, localised, and targeted ground raids' against Hezbollah in southern Lebanese villages.

'These raids will target Hezbollah strongholds that threaten Israeli towns, kibbutzim and communities along our border,' said military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, adding: 'Hezbollah turned Lebanese villages next to Israeli villages into military bases ready for an attack on Israel.'

But more hardline elements of Israel's government, including National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, this morning called for a wider operation to 'crush the terrorist organisation'.

Dystopian images that emerged early this morning showed Israeli flares and munitions lighting up the night sky in southern Lebanon, softening up Hezbollah positions in preparation for the IDF incursion.

The ground operation, which comes nearly a year on from Hamas' October 7 attacks, was given the green light yesterday, three days after Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was confirmed dead following a devastating attack in Beirut.

Meanwhile, Israel's air force continued to pound targets across Lebanon with brutal airstrikes, while also hitting Damascus in Syria and various locations in Gaza.
