As war between the US, Israel and Iran intensifies, some biblical scholars and Christian commentators are warning that ancient prophecies about the end of the world may be unfolding in real time.
Following the strikes that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, several faith-based commentators pointed to passages in the New Testament and Hebrew scriptures that they say foreshadow the escalating conflict.
According to a quote from Jesus in Matthew 24:6-7 in the New International Version (NIV) of the Bible: 'You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.'
Another passage cited by commentators points to Ezekiel 38:5, which refers to 'Persia,' widely understood to correspond to modern-day Iran, as part of a prophetic coalition that will rise against Israel in the so-called 'latter days.' 'Persia, Cush and Put will be with them, all with shields and helmets,' the prophecy reads in part.
The new interpretations come as the same podcast, Living Waters, warned that two major biblical verses appeared to be coming true in June last year, with both predicting turmoil in the Middle East.
The first of these apocalyptic prophecies revolved around 1 Thessalonians 5:3, written by the Apostle Paul, which warned that, 'While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly.'
