Chinese AI tool told researchers how to make bioweapons
Chinese AI developer Moonshot is conducting an internal review after researchers were able to persuade two of its popular Kimi models to tell them how to make biological weapons and carry out assassinations.
Mindgard, which tests the security of AI systems, told the BBC it discovered in July that Kimi K2.6 and K3 Swarm could evade safety limits put in place by developers.
It arose during a process called "jailbreaking", where researchers use a series of complex instructions to see if AI tools ignore guardrails - which Mindgard said should have stopped Kimi from discussing concerning topics.
Moonshot told the BBC it welcomed third-party input "as a key pillar for building better and safer AI".
The company also told the BBC it was in discussion with Mindgard about its findings.
Mindgard's founder Peter Garraghan told the BBC World Service programme Tech Life that its findings about Kimi K2.6 and K3 Swarm were concerning.
"Once the jailbreak works it will talk about any topic, it will even freely offer up recommendations about other topics that are also nefarious and it will be inventive and creative," he said.
Jailbreaks present a different kind of risk to those seen with the recent slew of high-profile AI incidents.
These have seen autonomous AI tools known as agents, developed by US firms including OpenAI, Meta and Anthropic, hack some online services.
While jailbreaks are complex processes that can take a lot of time and determination some experts fear hackers and other bad actors could try to use them to cause harm.
Anthropic recently said it had identified and disrupted attempts to use one of its AI model for "malicious activity" that could support the development of biological weapons.

Antisemitism on the rise at universities, charity warns
Cases of antisemitism affecting university students and staff in the UK increased in the last academic year, according to a charity that monitors antisemitic incidents.
The Community Security Trust (CST) said it had recorded 95 "university-related" incidents in the 2025-26 academic year - up from 83 the year before.
It said the number had fallen from its peak in the year after Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October 2023 and the war in Gaza began, but remains "substantially higher" than before that point.
Universities UK (UUK) represents more than 140 institutions and said its members needed to "protect Jewish students and staff", adding that the findings were a "serious concern".
Lucy Powell, education secretary in England, said the findings in the CST report were "deeply troubling".
"We expect universities to take a zero-tolerance approach to antisemitism, and are providing training to help university staff identify and respond to incidents swiftly," she said.
The CST defines an antisemitic incident as "university-related" if it concerns a student, member of staff or academic at a UK university "in their academic or student capacity" - including on campus and online.
In 2022-23, the last academic year before the 7 October attack, the CST recorded 53 incidents. That grew to 272 in 2023-24.
A report from the charity examining the past two academic years says reported incidents fell in 2024-25 and but grew again in 2025-26.

Ukraine's prized steel industry left in ruins by Russian missile campaign
Like thousands of other residents of Zaporizhzhia, Denys Maksyshko has spent years working for local steel factory Zaporizhstal. For generations, it has been the biggest and richest source of employment in this major Ukrainian city.
"Zaporizhstal is not just a big company, it's the heart of the city," he says.
Now, following a series of Russian missile strikes, this heart has stopped beating. The huge factory that employs 8,500 people shut down indefinitely after four waves of Russian attacks - two in August, and two in September.
"All the equipment has been almost completely destroyed. There are no windows left, and there are holes in the roofs. The blast furnaces have been almost completely ruined," Maksyshko complains.
Russia fired a total of 17 missiles at Zaporizhstal, according to Oleksandr Myronenko, chief operating officer of steelworks owner Metinvest. Eight workers were killed and 31 wounded.
"We're now clearing rubble and trying to plan recovery," Myronenko tells the BBC.
At the moment it is far from certain Zaporizhstal will ever start up again.

Amos 9:14-15 reads, “I will bring back the captives of My people Israel; they shall build the waste cities and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and drink wine from them; they shall also make gardens and eat fruit from them. I will plant them in their land, and no longer shall they be pulled up from the land I have given them, says the Lord your God.”
The point Amos makes for us is crucial to understanding the prophetic timeline of the last days. Though Amos was a contemporary of Hosea and Isaiah, we know that what Amos wrote in chapter 9 of his prophecy does not pertain to the return of the Jewish captives from Babylon to Jerusalem. We know this because what he describes did not happen. The Jews did return from their Babylonian captivity; they did build the waste cities, plant vineyards and gardens, and eat and drink from them. But they were “pulled up” from the land for nearly 2,000 years. This reveals that Amos’s prophecy was not fully fulfilled in the past. Therefore, the complete fulfillment is yet future.

Israeli settlers attack West Bank village and block Palestinian family's return home
More than 100 Israeli settlers have carried out attacks in a Palestinian village in the occupied West Bank, stopping a family escorted by the Israeli military from returning to their homes, which had been seized weeks ago by settlers.
Two houses belonging to the al-Tubasi family in Jalud, south of Nablus, were set on fire in the raid on Monday night and Israeli security forces were also targeted by settlers. Human rights groups say the events show how Israeli authorities are failing to take effective action against settler violence.
"It was extremely terrifying, beyond words. It's hard to imagine the situation," Mahmoud al-Tubasi told the BBC.
"My feeling now is that I am happy to have escaped death. I genuinely expected they were going to kill us."
Al-Tubasi, 60, his wife Aida, 51, and their 33-year-old son, Wael, had returned to their properties accompanied by Israeli forces after Israel's High Court ruled earlier this month that they must be allowed to go back.
