Iraq to ‘execute’ citizens who contact Israelis or support Zionism
CUFI has called upon the UK Foreign Secretary to intervene urgently after Iraq introduced a shocking new law that would see citizens executed or given life imprisonment if they communicate with Israelis.
“The Iraqi parliament’s plan to introduce the death penalty or imprisonment for Iraqis communicating with Israelis is completely barbaric and will set the country back to the exodus of Jews from Iraq last century," says CUFI's Des Starritt, "We’re very worried for Iraqi Jews in the country, many of whom may have family links to Israel, as well as for anyone in Iraq or the region of Kurdistan that has contact with Israelis or expresses support for Zionism. Not only does it place Iraq’s Jews, Christians and others in great danger, but it also extends to Iraqis living here in the UK as well as British nationals visiting Iraq. We therefore call upon the UK Foreign Office to take urgent action by using its diplomatic leverage to prevent Iraq implementing such extreme measures.”
