Iran SEIZES two US Navy sea drones and then gives them back during second confrontation in 12 days: Tensions build after encounter in the Red Sea

  • Iran seized two U.S. Navy sea drones on Thursday in the Red Sea off Yemen
  • They were later released as American warships closed in on an Iranian destroyer
  • Iranian state TV showed sailors examining two Saildrone Explorers
  • They were apparently thrown overboard as U.S. warships closed in
  • The incident follows a similar episode in the Persian Gulf
  • And last week American forces exchanged fire with Iran-backed troops in Syria
  • Iran on Friday said it had released two American sea drones that it seized in the Red Sea in the latest maritime showdown involving the U.S. Navy's new water-borne drone fleet in the Middle East.

The showdown is the latest reminder of tensions between the United States and Iran, following exchanges of fire between American troops and Iranian-backed forces in Syria, and as the two counties close in on a new nuclear deal.

Iranian state television broadcast footage it said came from the deck of its Jamaran destroyer.
