 Keir Starmer risks infuriating Labour's left with plan to 'delay recognition of Palestinian state to avoid rocking Britain's relationship with America and other allies'

Sir Keir Starmer will delay recognising a Palestinian state if Labour wins power next week due to fears it could rock Britain's relationship with the US, it is reported. 

Labour's manifesto states the party is 'committed to recognising a Palestinian state' as part of a renewed push for peace in the Middle East and a two-state solution.

Sir Keir is under pressure from Labour's left-wing to act quickly on this pledge if the party wins the general election on 4 July.

But, according to The Times, allies of the Labour leader have warned he should not rush into recognising a Palestinian state.

They have reportedly expressed fears that doing so would open up a dividing line with America and other Western nations.

With opinion polls putting Labour on course for a large majority, they are said to believe Sir Keir can afford to ignore pro-Palestinian voices on the party's left.

Yet there are early signs that, should Sir Keir delay a move on recognising a Palestinian state, he would infuriate significant parts of his party.

Former party leader Jeremy Corbyn posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, today: 'Palestinians are human beings who deserve self-determination.

'We must recognise the state of Palestine. Not some time in the future. Not when the time is right. Now.'

• Trump hit back, and said at one point: "I really don’t know what he said at the end of that sentence, and I don’t think he did either".

  It’s nearly 7:00 on the east coast of the United States, and reviews of the first presidential debate of the 2024 US election cycle are in.

  While Republican candidate Donald Trump faces criticism for the number of falsehoods he uttered, much of the attention has been focused on President Joe Biden’s poor performance.

  Biden appeared to struggle in several of his answers. As a result, concerns about his age and mental fitness have only risen further. Some Democrats have even asked after the debate whether the president could be replaced as the party’s presidential candidate.

  Speaking to the New York Times, an unnamed veteran Democrat says the president will face a "crescendo" of calls to step down. "Joe had a deep well of affection among Democrats. It has run dry.”

  Many of the president’s surrogates have come to his defence, though. Vice-President Kamala Harris told CNN “there was a slow start but there was a strong finish” by her running mate.

  Trump’s supporters, meanwhile, declared victory. House Speaker Mike Johnson called it “the biggest mismatch” in debate history.

• Israel has sent a stark warning to Hezbollah that it could 'take Lebanon back to the Stone Age' if border clashes erupt into a wider regional war.

  Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant made the comments during a visit to Washington on Wednesday, stressing that Israel would sooner avoid escalation.

  'We do not want war, but we are preparing for every scenario,' he told reporters. 'Hezbollah understands very well that we can inflict massive damage in Lebanon if a war is launched.'

• Israeli forces have exchanged fire with the militants based in Lebanon ever since the October 7 attack on Israel by Hezbollah's ally Hamas.

  Fears of the border skirmishes boiling over into a full-blown was have grown in recent weeks since Israel revealed it had approved plans for a Lebanon offensive, prompting new threats from Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah.

  Warning against the escalation of hostilities, the UN's humanitarian coordinator Martin Griffiths said on Wednesday that Lebanon was 'the flashpoint beyond all flashpoints'.

  'It's beyond planning. It's potentially apocalyptic,' warned Griffiths, whose term ends this week.
