Houthis claim major advance in Yemen and tighten grip on Red Sea shipping lane

Yemen's Houthis have claimed a major advance on the western Red Sea coast, consolidating their grip on the key international shipping route.

The Iran-backed group seized Perim Island at the mouth of the waterway in the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a source from Yemen's internationally recognised government told the BBC.

It comes a day after the Houthis captured the strategic port city of Mokha from Saudi-backed pro-government forces, according to military sources. A Yemeni military official told the AFP news agency the Houthis now control the entire coastline.

The Houthis earlier said they posed no threat to international shipping but reiterated their threat to target vessels from Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the country's de facto ruler, has personally pressed US President Donald Trump to take military action against the Houthis during their rapid advance, two sources familiar with the matter told CBS News - the BBC's media partner in North America.

Trump has so far declined to involve the US military directly, offering instead to assist with intelligence and targeting support, the sources said.

A senior Trump administration official later told the BBC: "We are in continuous dialogue with Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Yemen government regarding regional stability."

Israel says it has destroyed major underground Hezbollah base

Israel's military says it has destroyed a large underground complex operated by Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.

It said it used more than 1,000 tonnes of explosives to destroy two tunnels spanning more than 2km (1.2 miles) beneath the Ali Taher Ridge.

The blast triggered seismic activity equivalent to a magnitude 4.1 earthquake, according to the US Geological Survey.

There was no immediate public response from Hezbollah or the Lebanese government. Israeli forces took control of the ridge last week after months of fighting with the Iran-backed group there. The Israeli military occupies a large swathe of southern Lebanon captured after the conflict with Hezbollah resumed in March.

Images released by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) showed a fireball lighting up the sky.

"The sky lit up and about 15 seconds later we heard the terrifying sound," Ahamed, a resident in Nabatieh, about 6km west of the ridge, told the BBC. "The house shook all together as if it was literally an earthquake."

He said people were screaming and children were crying, and that cars filled the roads as people left the area for Beirut. Tremors were even felt in the coastal city of Saida 40km north.

The IDF said the underground infrastructure included a command centre used by Hezbollah's Badr unit and contained dozens of rockets, missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as anti-tank weapons, mines and explosives.

"This was strategic infrastructure that was constructed over two decades, funded and planned by the Iranian terror regime," the IDF said in a statement on Telegram.

"All of the terrorists who were inside the infrastructure were eliminated or fled."

Yemen's Houthis seize strategic Red Sea port of Mokha from Saudi-backed pro-government forces

Yemen's Houthis have seized the strategic Red Sea port city of Mokha from Saudi-backed pro-government forces, military sources and witnesses say.

Mokha's capture leaves the Iran-backed group only 75km (46 miles) away from the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the southern gateway to a trade route that links Asia and Europe.

The Houthis said they posed no threat to international shipping but reiterated their threat to target vessels from Saudi Arabia, which has relied on the Red Sea for oil exports since the US and Israel's war effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf.

The escalation of the conflict between the Houthis, Yemen's government and Saudi Arabia has contributed to a surge in oil prices.

Hundreds of people have reportedly been killed and thousands displaced since the Houthis launched an offensive in the south-west a week ago.

A Saudi-led coalition has also carried out air strikes on Houthi-controlled areas in western Yemen in support of the pro-government forces, and the Houthis have launched missiles and drones at cities and oil facilities in southern Saudi Arabia.

Anthropic blocks possible attempt to use AI to make biological weapons

Anthropic says it has identified and disrupted attempts to use its AI model for "malicious activity" which could support the development of biological weapons.

The claim, made in the firm's recent threat intelligence report, is the latest in a growing series of warnings from AI researchers and industry insiders about the technology's potential risks to humanity.

The warning has prompted calls to action, with US Senator Bernie Sanders demanding a pause on advanced AI development and a ban on artificial superintelligence.

President Donald Trump has so far rejected such fears, saying on Thursday he was concerned "if we don't win AI, we're going to be put in a very bad position".

The company published its latest threat intelligence report, external on Thursday. Other AI firms publish similar reports.

This includes Google, who wrote on Tuesday, external a person had attempted to use its AI tool Gemini to "complete, step-by-step technical guide for synthesizing weaponised biological agents".

Anthropic's AI model Claude was also used in a Russia-linked cyber espionage campaign and by an Iranian propaganda institution, according to Anthropic's report.

The cases of concern detected over the past eight months ranged from fake dating apps and hotel Wifi scams, to surveillance built to identify dissidents.

Anthropic has also accused Chinese AI firms of trying to replicate Claude's capabilities.

Trump Attempts To Purchase A Republican Midterm Victory With A ‘$5,000 Dividend Promise’ Paid For By The Same American Taxpayers He Is Asking To Vote

Cheaper Groceries Donald Trump Promised Before Unveiling His New $5,000 Dividend last night?

Donald Trump has returned to the political stage with yet another spectacular promise of free money, this time pledging a $5,000 “Trump Dividend” to every American adult—but only if Republicans retain control of Congress in November.

That is not an economic plan; it is an election-year cash inducement with Trump’s name stamped across it. Washington is already drowning beneath more than $40 trillion in debt, yet Trump is dangling a payout that could cost approximately $1.3 trillion without explaining where the money will come from. The message could hardly be more blatant: give Republicans your vote, and Trump says he will give you a check purchased with your own tax dollars. Now we see Donald Trump for who he really is, a shameless conman who will say anything, do anything, and promise anything to retain power. Please see the following 9 unfulfilled promises he has made over the past 18 months.
