It appears that Russia is gearing up for a really big move. The Ukrainians believe that plans are being made for a ground operation to conquer Kyiv, and the constant wave of airstrikes that we are witnessing right now could be a prelude to such a ground operation. If Vladimir Putin actually pulls the trigger, it is very likely that our European allies would feel compelled to intervene. If our European allies do intervene, Russian forces could start hitting them directly. At that point, the United States would be committed to a shooting war with Russia whether we like it or not.

Russian strike hits rail workers in new deadly attacks on Kyiv

 At least 12 people have been killed and 17 injured, including two children, in overnight Russian missile and drone strikes on Ukraine's capital Kyiv and the wider region, officials say.

In Kyiv, six of the eight casualties were railway workers of the state Ukrzaliznytsia company after a depot was hit. Fires were reported in three city districts. Four people were killed in the town of Boryspil where a residential building was hit.

Russia's military said its "massive strike using high-precision weapons" targeted Ukraine's "military-industrial and fuel-energy" facilities. One person was also killed in Ukrainian strikes on Russia's western Belgorod region, acting Governor Aleksandr Shuvaev said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday morning that nearly 350 rescue workers had been working through the night in Kyiv and the surrounding region after the latest strikes. In a post on social media, he said Russia had fired a "significant number of jet drones and ballistic missiles".

Eight other Ukrainian regions were attacked, Zelensky said, adding that an Indian national was among the casualties. The latest attacks come after 38 people were killed in Russian strikes on a weapons depot in the Kyiv region on Friday, causing shells, mines and drones to detonate.

US army secretary resigns after months of tension

US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has submitted his resignation after about 18 months in the role.

His departure was confirmed by CBS, the BBC's US media partner, which reported it came after months of conflict between him and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth. The youngest-ever army secretary has often been referred to as President Donald Trump's "drone guy".

Driscoll, 41, has been "highly effective" in advancing Trump's agenda "to Make America Strong Again" and provided "outstanding leadership" during military operations, the White House said in a statement given to CBS.

The BBC has contacted the White House, Pentagon and Army for comment. Driscoll is the latest in a string of recent high-profile military leaders to depart, including Navy Secretary John Phelan who abruptly quit in April.

Other notable departures include Army Chief of Staff Randy George, Army Gen David Hodne and Maj Gen William Green. Since entering the Pentagon, Hegseth has fired more than a dozen senior military officers, including the chief of naval operations and the Air Force's vice-chief of staff.

The details of the behind-the-scenes friction between Driscoll and Hegseth are unclear but CBS notes that the army secretary is good friends with George, who was reportedly asked by Hegseth to resign.

The post of army secretary is the top civilian leader of the US Army, directing active duty troops, along with the National Guard and reserve soldiers. Driscoll previously served in the Army and was an officer in 2007 before leading a cavalry platoon and deploying to Iraq for several months in 2009.

As army secretary, Driscoll became known as Trump's "drone guy" due to his embrace of emerging battlefield technologies.

Allah’s Mafia Ten Striking Parallels—Many Rarely Noticed—Between Islam and Organized Crime

Over the years, a variety of people have independently compared Islam to the mafia. During a 2014 debate on HBO’s Real Time, Bill Maher famously called Islam “the only religion that acts like the mafia, that will f***ing kill you if you say the wrong thing, draw the wrong picture, or write the wrong book.”

In 2021, Britain’s Grace Baptist Mission, referring specifically to the dangers facing Muslim converts to Christianity, offered an even more concise formulation: “Islam is like the mafia—you can go in, but you can’t come out.”

In 2022, Bangladeshi ex-Muslim activist Arifur Rahman described Muslim communities as “autonomous systems” whose internal abuses remain hidden from surrounding societies: “We don’t know what goes on inside,” he said. “It is almost like the mafia.”

Perhaps most revealingly, Muslims themselves used the comparison while threatening an Egyptian apostate interviewed for the 2024 academic study Leaving Islam: Ex-Muslims and Zemiology. “Do you know what mafia is?” they asked him. “You just exist now; after ten minutes you don’t exist and nobody knows what happened to you!” He and his daughter were subsequently forced to flee Egypt.

Most of those who compare Islam to the mafia cite the same one or two parallels—murdering critics or punishing defectors. In reality, there are at least ten parallels—and some of the most revealing are rarely, if ever, noticed.
