Zelensky says he expects war to continue into winter after talks with US envoys

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said he expects the war with Russia to continue into the winter, following talks with Donald Trump's top envoys in Kyiv.

The discussions finished without an announcement of a major breakthrough, after Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner travelled to Ukraine for the first time since Russia's full-scale invasion. The previous day, the pair had held talks with Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

Witkoff said he was "encouraged" by what he called "substantive" and important talks in Kyiv.Zelensky stressed that he wanted a just peace with no opportunity for renewed aggression by Russia.

Following rounds of talks on Sunday, which lasted several hours behind closed doors, Zelensky told reporters they had agreed officials from Ukraine, Europe and America would meet in the near future to continue discussions. He also called for a trilateral meeting with Russia and the US.

"We're confident there'll be a good resolution here," Witkoff said, adding the negotiators had "made a lot of progress in Moscow", referring to the pair's discussions on Saturday.

When asked about the talks in Moscow, Kushner said the US team "went through a lot of the ideas that hadn't worked to date" and "tried to think about" what elements are needed for "durable peace".

Peace talks rich in symbolism but fundamental differences between Russia and Ukraine remain

The talks in Kyiv were rich in symbolism. The sight of Donald Trump's envoys setting foot on Ukrainian soil for the first time since Russia's full-scale invasion.

The fact they had to travel by train because they could not risk flying and running the gauntlet of Russian drones - weapons launched on the orders of the man at whose table they sat in the Kremlin only hours ago.

The symbolism of Ukrainian President Zelensky greeting Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner at Kyiv's Saint Sophia Cathedral, not only an icon of Ukraine's ancient history, but also just a few yards from where Russian drones hit the headquarters of the country's security services on Friday.

You did not have to join too many dots to work out the point Zelensky was making. Both sides held talks for several hours; they were later joined by some European national security advisers, including the UK's National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell.

And afterwards, all sides spoke warmly of having held substantive discussions. They spoke hopefully of reviving past "trilateral talks" involving both the US and Europe.

US and Iran trade retaliatory attacks on ships as conflict flares

The US and Iran traded retaliatory attacks on ships on Saturday, in the latest round of strikes since fighting flared up a week ago following a month of relative calm.

The US military said it had "permanently disabled" two Iran-linked oil tankers, including one near Kharg Island, and "completely destroyed" a third in the Gulf of Oman.

Iran's state media confirmed the strikes and said Tehran had attacked three US-affiliated vessels in response, as well as three oil tankers travelling through the Strait of Hormuz along an "unauthorised" route.

The BBC has approached US Central Command (Centcom) for comment about Iran's latest claims to have targeted US ships.

The strikes come a day after President Donald Trump dismissed the conflict as "small potatoes", with little apparent progress towards ending the six-month war. He has not commented on Saturday's attacks.

The news of Iran's latest retaliation came hours after Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth wrote on social media: "It's simple: if Iran shoots at US ships, we will destroy (and sink) their oil tankers."

According to US Central Command (Centcom), two US warships had been targeted by Iran before the American attack on three Iran-linked oil tankers.

Centcom said it "successfully evaded" the multiple attacks from the IRGC earlier in the day, which were targeting a US aircraft carrier and guided-missile destroyer. No American troops were harmed, it said.

US envoys set for Ukraine talks after meeting Putin in Russia

Two US envoys are hoping for "equally productive meetings" in Ukraine after holding talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on ending the war, US say.

Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are set to land in Kyiv on Sunday, having "discussed substantive plans for next steps" with Putin on Saturday, according to the White House.

It is not yet clear exactly what they are, but an announcement is expected in the coming weeks, as efforts to end the war in Ukraine gather pace.

It will be to the first trip by US President Donald Trump's top negotiators to Ukraine's capital. Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have agreed to halt strikes on each other's capitals for three days. As Witkoff and Kushner were negotiating at the Kremlin, Zelensky said he was ready for "a substantive conversation".

Saturday's talks in Moscow lasted three hours and were held behind closed doors in Putin's official residence in the heart of the Russian capital, according to Russian state media. Details are still emerging, but both sides have given broadly positive remarks without going into specifics.

Putin adviser Yuri Ushakov described the talks as "constructive, extremely frank". "The talks were not limited to an exchange of views on resolving the Ukrainian crisis - economic issues and potential major, mutually beneficial Russian-American projects were discussed in considerable detail," he said.

Ushakov also said "note was made of the Russian army's tangible advances in the combat zone" and that there was acknowledgement that talks needed to address "the root causes of the conflict".

Ed Miliband blasted by Israeli government over Gaza 'stories' as critics call out 'Jew hate'

The US Ambassador to Israel described the Foreign Secretary's accounts as 'Jew hate' that 'knows no boundaries'

The Israeli government has hit out at Ed Miliband over a video describing stories he had heard from people in Gaza over medicine being blocked, which the department claim to be entirely fictitious.

The Foreign Secretary attended a meeting with people who had spent time on the ground in Gaza, describing what he had heard as "horrific".

He recalled hearing accounts of medicines being blocked, and "children dying while waiting for vital life-saving treatment".

He said: "When you hear that account of what is happening, you know that we as a UK government, as the Prime Minister has said, have got to act and act more decisively than we have."

Vice President JD Vance was recently asked a question that has nothing to do with elections, economics or foreign policy. "On a scale of one to ten, how confident are you that you would go to heaven?" Vance paused before answering. "It's high, but it's not a 10. I mean, it's a seven or it's an eight."
