Scriptures Say Russia WILL Attack Israel - The Magog Invasion

Scriptures Say Russia WILL Attack Israel

This message is not about Russia’s attack on Ukraine despite that being forefront in the news. Due to the recent events initiated by Russia against Ukraine, the world is polarizing itself against Russia through increasing sanctions and supplying Ukraine with weapons to defend itself along with humanitarian aid. Other than that, the world does not seem to want to get involved any further. Unfortunately, this would seem to only encourage Russia to be aggressive against other countries in the future.

This message is about Russia’s future attack upon Israel and not Ukraine!   With the end-time events unfolding in the world as we directly see them happening, this attack could come within a matter of years. Most Christians are familiar with the sequence of events described in Isaiah, Ezekiel, Jeremiah, and Daniel but the future attack on Israel by Russia is worth a review as Russia has entered the scene in recent days.

Russia WILL attack Israel one day as foretold by the Scriptures

The primary passage which tells us of Russia’s attack on Israel is:  "And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Son of man, set thy face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him, And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal: And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armor, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords: PersiaEthiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet: Gomer, and all his bands; the house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee. Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them." (Exekiel 38:1-7)

The word “Russia” does not exist in the scriptures; however, we know that Ezekiel was talking about todays’ Russia as the Hebrew reference to “Rosh” in verse 2 is a shortened version of the word Russia and Ezekiel tells us that this land is to the far north of Israel (Ezekiel 38:6,15). Linguistically and geographically, he has identified the only country that meets these requirements.

An alliance is assembled by the “king of the North” (Daniel 11:5-35) identifying that Russia’s ruler is the commander of the alliance of nations against Israel.  The name given by the scriptures of this leader is Gog, of the land of Magog.  There are scholars that believe that Gog is a title and not the name of the leader.  If that is the case, and today was the period being talked about than Gog would be President Vladimir Putin. We also know told that he is from the land of Magog.  As you may recall, Magog was one of Noah’s grandsons (Gen 10:2; 1 Chron 1:5) and many scholars believe that they settled around the Black and Caspian Seas on Russia’s southern border which resulted in the “-stan” countries (Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, and possibly Afghanistan).  These territories previously belonged to the Soviet Union and all these regions are bound by their religion of Islam.

The Coalition of Countries Russia Assembles to Attack Israel

Meshech and Tubal are also Noah’s grandsons (Gen 10:2).  According to C. I. Scofield, Meshech is “Moscow” and Tubal is “Tobolsk” but others believe that Tubal could be a reference the land presently occupied by Turkey.   In 1935 Persia changed its name to Iran and in 1979 changed its name to the Islamic Republic of Iran. Iran is the most vocal enemy of Israel and has stated openly that they are planning their destruction by any means. Ethiopia was founded by another one of Noah’s grandsons (Gen 10:6).  At the time Ezekiel wrote this, the country of Ethiopia was the land in the south of Egypt and today it represents the country of Sudan which is another vocal enemy of Israel.  The country of Libya still exists in the same location and name as it did 2,500 years ago during the time of Ezekiel.  Gomer was also one of Noah’s grandsons (Gen 10:2-3).  We do not know the current country that Gomer represents but some scholars believe it to be Germany because of the similarity of the names. Since Germany was so strongly against the Jewish people in World War II, an alliance with this coalition would add anti-Semitism and hatred against the Jewish people.  Togarmah was a great-grandson of Noah (Gen 10:3) and many believe that this represents Turkey which is north of Israel.

We can’t say for certain who these countries that join Russia are, but the best hypothesis based on the scriptures and what we know of the history of the territories is that Russia and Turkey will come down from the north. Iran will join them from the east and Sudan and Libya will come up from the south and perhaps Germany will come from the west.  These are the main nations; however, the scriptures imply there are others as Ezekiel 38:9 tells us that this coalition will have “many peoples” on its side. We also know that the leader of Russia will lead the Coalition of nations against Israel.

As these End-times are Unfolding, How Do We Follow the Lord?

First of all, commit your life to follow the Lord!  Follow the leading of the Holy Spirit continuously throughout each day of your life.  Hate evil and run from it as this is the Fear of the Lord [see “Fear of the Lord” link below].  Know that you are leaving the Kingdom of Darkness to never have anything to do with it again, and a citizen of the Kingdom of Light, and as such you receive your orders from the Lord.   Set in your heart what Jacob said so many years ago: “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” (Josh 24:15b).

Determine your Service of Calling and use the Gifts of the Spirit that He will provide to you to perform whatever He desires for you as you serve Him (yes, think of yourself as a willing servant, a bondservant, just as the Apostles did as they served the Lord).  “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?” (Rom 6:16). Put on the full armor of God, Study the Word of God and hide it in your heart (memorize it) so that you won’t’ sin against Him (Ps 119:11) and seek His guidance in Prayer.

We are Required to Test Everything for Ourselves!

The principle we are to follow is for us to "Prove all things by the Word of God” (1 Thess 5:21).  That includes all ministers, teaching, preaching, doctrines, sermons, writings, opinions, and practices. Examine all by the light of the Bible. Any teaching that is not 100% supported by the Scriptures you are to reject wholly. Studying is not optional for Christians but required by God. In fact, we are commanded by God to “Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Tim 2:15).

The problem is that there is no such thing as a perfect English translation that tells us exactly what God’s word is. There is always a discrepancy between the original Greek (NT in this case) to English and mankind has created more than 450 different English translations which have thousands of differences between themselves. So which version should you be studying if they are all saying different things? The best you can hope for is to find a translation that mirrors as closely as possible the original meanings of the scriptures.

How much easier would it be to study God’s Word if an English New Testament translation existed that took each of the original Koine Greek words and applied the original meaning along with the original parsing assigned to each of those words?  This is something that even the King James scholars did not do because of the constraints placed on them by King James, their lack of knowledge of Greek, and their time constraints. The Pure Word is a New Testament reference that does just that! It is the perfect resource that every Christian should have to dive into God’s Word and use along with your preferred version of the Scriptures.
