RUSSIA HEAVILY IN DEBT AS THE UKRAINE WAR TAKES EFFECT AND FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 1918 SANCTIONS HAVE CAUSED PUTIN AND HIS MATES TO DEFAULT ON ITS DEBT TO THE WEST

 Russia borrows £11.4billion in its largest ever debt issuance in a single day to continue funding war in Ukraine

  • Russia raised £11.4billion by issuing new debt bonds at the weekend, MoD said 
  • It is the largest amount ever raised by Moscow in one go, amid the Ukraine war 
  • Russia's military budget is expected to be 40 per cent higher than forecast in 2023 as almost a year of intense fighting takes its toll 
  • Western sanctions saw Russia default on its debt in July, for first time since 1918 

  • Russia has raised more than £11billion by issuing debt to investors as the war in Ukraine continues to take a punishing toll on the country's finances.

    Moscow issued £11.4billion worth of debt - effectively selling IOU notes - at the weekend, Britain's MoD said, in the single-largest sale of its kind in Russian history.

    It comes against the backdrop of a forecast 40 per cent increase in military spending next year amid the Ukraine war, with money likely going towards plugging that hole.
