Tragically, it always seemed as though it was only a matter of time before Gaza started attacking Israel again. For the first time since a long-term ceasefire was reached on August 26, a mortar shell was launched from Gaza at Israel on Tuesday according to the IDF Spokesperson’s Twitter feed. This was also confirmed by IDF Spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner on his Twitter account. Lerner said that no injuries or damage was reported.
Gaza fired thousands of projectiles at Israel during Operation Protective Edge, which lasted for weeks. During that conflict, multiple ceasefires were violated by Gaza terrorists. The Times of Israel reported that Hamas denied responsibility for the latest attack. In a statement, the Gaza terror group said it wanted to maintain the ceasefire with Israel.
In an unrelated discussion, the US on Tuesday reaffirmed that Hamas is responsible for keeping Gaza quiet. In comments to reporters released by the State Department, spokesperson Marie Harf said, “When we’re talking about Gaza, Hamas has control of the security situation in Gaza… and when rockets are repeatedly fired by Hamas from Gaza into Israel, they’re the ones who have the responsibility for that.”
