• Ukrainian forces managed to repel numerous attempted advances as Russian shelling and strikes increased on the Donbas line of control on Tuesday, a British military update said. 

  On one of the most dramatic days of the war, Moscow hit more than 1,200 targets as it launched its long-feared offensive in eastern Ukraine.

  In what is likely to be the definitive battle for Ukraine, Russia tried to break through the 300-mile defensive front line of Kyiv's forces.

Putin's troops 'will be remembered as the most barbaric and inhuman army in the world' with Russia 'deemed a source of absolute evil for generations', President Zelensky declares

• President Zelensky condemned the Russian army in a national address as the war entered 55th day overnight
• Zelensky said Putin's forces would go down in history as 'the most barbaric and inhuman' in the world, and that when the full scope of Russian war crimes comes to light it will stain the country 'for generations' 
• He also renewed calls for his allies in the West to send more weapons, saying if Ukraine had access to the same kinds of arms the Russians have, then 'we would have already ended this war' 
• Ukraine's military said it repelled attacks in the Donbas region Tuesday as Russia began the first phases of a battle which is likely to decide the future course of the war
  
  
  

• Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned the Russian army as 'the most barbaric and inhuman in the world' and said the country will be stained 'as a source of absolute evil for generations' as Vladimir Putin's men stepped up attacks across the country in an effort to seize bloody victory from the jaws of defeat.

  Zelensky, in a late-night address to his nation, said Putin's military has been 'purposefully killing civilians' with weapons banned under international law and that once the full scope of their 'war crimes' comes to light 'a Russian passport will mean only one thing in any country: Unequivocal condemnation from all decent people.'

  The talismanic president also used the speech to praise his armed forces and people for resisting the invasion as fighting enters its 55th day today, while renewing calls for Ukraine's western allies to send more weapons and faster in order to ensure the Russian army is defeated.
