If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it: Attributed in, The Sack of Rome, by Alexander Stille, p. 14.
The statement above is widely attributed to Adolf Hitler’s propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels. Since no reliable source has been located that shows Goebbels’ making that remark, the history of the quote proves its own point.
The “big lie” being nurtured today is the view that Israel is an apartheid state, and it should share the fate as the system that once existed in South Africa. At first, the only voices linking Israel to apartheid were in the radical left camp. Lately, a number of well-known names have been using this term.
Former President Jimmy Carter, who has totally given himself over to the pro-Islamist side, came under heavy fire in 2007 for titling his book on Middle East peace, Palestine: Peace or Apartheid. Carter has freely admitted that his views on Israeli treatment of the Palestinians are too radical for even President Obama to stomach, and as a result of the book, Carter is not welcomed at the White House.
The days of Carter banishment from the White House may soon come to an end. A few days ago, Secretary of State John Kerry touched off his own firestorm of criticism by also warning that if there’s no two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict soon, Israel risks becoming “an apartheid state.” Kerry later apologized for making the comment, but the intended seed had already been planted.
The Secretary of State needs to be careful on how he throws labels around. It can be argued that America has been an apartheid state for more than a century. After we won the Spanish-American war, we took the island of Puerto Rico and Guam as spoils. Over 116 years later, residents of these islands still cannot vote in U.S. federal elections. The U.S. Virgin Islands and The Northern Mariana Islands are locked in the same limbo status.
No one is raising a fuss about the inequality of citizenry in other countries. In various areas of Czechoslovakia, Hong Kong, and Latvia, a certain percentage of its citizens do not have voting rights. For example, in Latvia, nearly one in five of its citizens do not enjoy voting rights. All of these countries make a distinction between people on the basis of their nationality, not on the basis of the territory where they live. Israel is always singled out as a special case.
Everything I’ve said up to this point is insignificant when compared to the real reason why Israel has cut itself off from the Arabs living in Gaza, the Golan, and the West Bank. Back in the early 2000s, the Palestinians became infected with the idea that it was okay to turn yourself into a human bomb for the purpose of killing large numbers of Jews.
From 2000 to 2003, a total 73 Palestinian suicide bombings were carried out from the West Bank killing 293 Israelis and injuring over 1,900. Palestinian young men, deluded by a promise of a heavenly orgy in their honor—would load themselves up with explosives and sneak into Israel to carry out their evil task. The favorite target of suicide bombers were discos, bars, cafes or any other places where large numbers of Jews would gather.
I remember this time well, because I was furious with former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon for tolerating the murder of Israeli citizens. Sharon didn’t want to appear heavy handed, so he tried to reason with his enemy. The most disgusting part was Yasser Arafat acting like he was powerless to stop the bombings.
The Israeli government was final pushed the point where it decided to cut itself complete off from the Palestinians. A barrier wall that was over 1,200 kilometers in length was constructed by the military. Once the barrier was complete, the bombings came to a sudden end.
The barrier has been an embarrassment to the world because it shows the Palestinians true nature. Once they were isolated from Israel, they turned on each other like wild animals. Few people bother to remember that Hamas gained full-control of the Gaza Strip by murdering all the representatives of the Palestinian National Authority. The constant fixation these people have with making rockets and bombs proves that an apartheid system is the least Israel should do keep the Palestinians out of mischief.
I’m sure most of you are familiar with the burdensome stone prophecy. Most people focus of the curse part. I think Zechariah’s prediction also shows that the nations of the world will never be able to ignore Israel. Even as now, where everything seems relatively calm, they still found some excuse to be upset with the Jewish state.
“And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it” (Zechariah 12:3).
